The origins of Jal Mahal date back to the 18th century. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Madho Singh I as a royal pleasure retreat and hunting lodge for duck shooting trips. Later, his successor, Madho Singh II, made significant renovations, blending Rajput and Mughal architectural styles to give the palace its present grandeur.
Over the centuries, the lake and palace faced periods of neglect, but a major restoration project in the early 21st century revived its lost glory.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Jal Mahal is that four of its five floors remain underwater when the lake is full, with only the top floor visible above the surface.
